Here are some tips on crossing by ferry on Lake Toba from one of our Medan-based writers who recently traveled to Lake Toba:
- Look for Pandu Hotel Prapat because they have their own standard ferry that is well maintained, with an adequate amount of lifevest. You need to rent the entire ferry with prices starting at Rp. 700,000 during the normal season. They often work with travel agents. So if you come in a large group of 15-20 people, this is a practical and safe choice.
- Around the area near major hotels, there are ferry services in better condition and a little more expensive (Rp. 25,000 per person) than ferries that are anchored at the main port near the market.
- Pay attention to weather conditions (especially wind) before boarding the ferry, because most ferries (other than those we mentioned above) are wooden ferries that are very unstable. The wind tends to appear around 3-4 pm and so on.
- There is money and goods. Our writer tried a wooden boat at a cost of Rp. 15,000 per person, and the boat was very outdated. Because the price is cheap, they continue to wait for more passengers.
- We recommend choosing a ferry boat from how it looks. If it looks new, sturdy and reliable, even if the price is more expensive, you should choose it for your own comfort and safety.
How, ready to enjoy the enchanting beauty of Lake Toba? Who would you like to have fun with here? Their mention in the comments section below!

Transportation

To enter Tuk Tuk, Samosir Island (Lake Toba's main tourist area), you have to take a ferry from Ajibata Harbor in Parapat to Tomok Harbor in Tuk Tuk. The trip will cost around IDR 8,000 per person but remember to double check prices to avoid fraud.
If you rent a car, you can also cross the car to Tuk Tuk (including drivers and passengers) for only Rp. 91,500.
Ferry Schedule
Parapat to the Tuk Tuk: 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m., 18:30 p.m.
Tuk Tuk to Parapat: 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00
Important note: Keep in mind that the schedule can change at any time!
On Samosir Island, we suggest you rent a bicycle or motorbike (around Rp. 100,000 / day) to explore the island. Both are available on the island and still be careful when driving.

The best time to visit

To be able to enjoy the beauty of Lake Toba to the fullest, we recommend you to visit during the dry season (May to September). During this period, you will get brighter blue skies and pleasant weather for activities.
Avoid visiting in the rainy season (November to the end of March), unless you want to spend your vacation stuck in a hotel room because the rain never stops.
National holidays such as the Idul Fitri holiday or Chinese New Year are also not ideal times to travel here, because besides going to be crowded and crowded with tourists, prices will also usually be more expensive.
